P2000 Networking Weirdness

Today, when I booted my P at work, I found that the Ethernet had disappeared.  It had gone.  Absconded.  Not to be found in "Network and Dialup Settings".  Not even visilble in the Device Manager.  Missing in action.  Only the wi-fi adapter remained.  I became concerned.  I figured it might be because I booted without the Ethernet cable connected, but that shouldn't have caused the adapter to disappear.

When I got home this evening and plugged in the cable, it still wasn't there.  Only a reboot brought the Ethernet adapter back from the Ether.  Stranger still, when it came back, all my previous settings, including the new name I had given it, were still there, which means it must have still been around somewhere in some nether-regional cache.  I've used several Win2k systems over the past three years, at least three of them have been laptops, and I've never observed NIC behavior quite like this before.

I just changed my browser's home page to the new Google News page.  This is significant in that my home page has been My Yahoo! for the last five+ years.  I've also had the same mobile phone number for the last seven years, and the same email address for the last eight years.  Clearly, there are some things I don't like to change.

So why the move now?  I could say it's because I really like Google in general, or that their new news aggregator is wicked cool, but that wouldn't be complete.  The real reason I've made the switch now is that I'm sick and tired of the whack-a-mole pop-up windows and gratuitous Flash adds that are increasingly common on the My Yahoo! home page.  Yahoo was better when it was simple.  What a shame.

Also, Google's news page has more pictures.

Bridgetown Grill has re-opened.  Bridgetown Grill is one of my all-time favorite local restaurants.  I've been going to the one on Roswell Road for years.  My wife and I had our post-wedding "reception" there.  The Jamaican Burittos are wonderful!

To my disappointment, they closed a few months back, coencidentally just before my previous employer and I parted ways.  Today, they are once again open for lunch.  I was their first lunch customer.
