SMS in the US

Because of the issues using SMS across different carriers in this country, and because just about everyone I would care to SMS with except my wife is on a different carrier than I am, I just don't use SMS much.  I would like to, if only forwarding and replying would work seamlessly.

The one thing I do use it for quite often: Sending messages and reminders to myself.  Rather than carrying a PDA, when I want to set an appointment, take down the name of a book I might want, or remind myself of something to do later, I just send an SMS to my email account, then pick it up on my laptop later and add it to my PIM.  It's a cheesy system, but it works great.
