State Spending Data Going OnlineIn efforts to have spending transparency, Kansas put their spending information online. Kansas isn't alone in making spending data more available to citizens, but their effort involves a new database.
The same article mentioned
"There's
no excuse in our age of technology to not have this information readily
available and accessible to citizens," said Annie Patnaude, a
spokeswoman for Americans for Prosperity, a group promoting limited government. The idea for the state Web sites spun from a similar, congressionally ordered project
to digitally track U.S. government spending by the end of the year.
Democrats and Republicans in Congress were inspired by a nonprofit Web site by OMB Watch that helps citizens track federal spending. The effort was funded by The Sunlight Foundation, a Washington, D.C., group that also supports the state transparency initiatives.

State Governors' SalariesRecently Stateline.org posted results from a 2007 survey on the salaries of state governors, with a bar graph. The California Governator's paycheck was recently voted up, making CA's the highest
at $206,500, yet the Governor gives his back. The governor
of Maine makes less than his assistant. If you wonder what gets them running, for their motivation this article includes:
"When people run for governor, they know
what the salary is," said Ingrid Reed, a political scientist at Rutgers
University in New Jersey. "They're not doing it for the money. They're
doing it for the power to do good deeds."
