Another controversial piece from Mr Winer, this time on a taboo subject: paying for software. Most developers have strong opinions about paying for music, one way or another, but when it hits home, some (I won't totally extricate myself from this group) have very conflicting goals: to get pay (well) for the software we write, while expecting all software we build upon (or simply use) to be of the open source variety or coming from some "greedy" corporation, so it's OK to "borrow" (like stealing a sheep from the king).
I hope the following excerpt gets you to read his article and even the addendum
"Today software and music, software and writing, software and all kinds of creativity, are indistinguishable. There is no clear line dilineating where one ends and the other starts. Nor is there a line between people. To be creative in either technology or the arts requires an understanding of both."

LoQuo's server power supply enter deep coma today. For 15 euros (labor included) I got a new PS here in BCN in while you wait fashion. Only 2 hours without service. Probably we won't break yesterday's traffic record: 1200 unique visitors / 8000 pages views.
Nonetheless, murphy willing, LoQUo will have a new home pretty soon.

Don't generally agree with Mr Safire but respect him. He's definitively right on this one: "We've already seen what happened when the FCC allowed the monopolization of local radio: Today three companies own half the stations in America, delivering a homogenized product that neglects local news coverage and dictates music sales" Want to read more?
