Cruel & Unusual / The Riverfront Times (Oct 9, 2002)

In 1998, around the time Painted From Memory -- his team-up with Burt Bacharach -- hit stores, Elvis Costello gave up on the idea of playing rock & roll, or so he said. But he didn't really need to put it in words: Costello had already spent much of the 1990s taking sidesteps, sparring with his own discography, dancing with the horn-rimmed skeleton in his closet. There were soundtracks for TV and film (1994's G.B.H. and 1996's Jake's Progress, both with Richard Harvey); classical collabs (1993's The Juliet Letters, with the Brodsky Quartet, and 1997's Terror + Magnificence, with saxophonist John Harle); even an alternate vision and version of Painted From Memory (the avant, unguarded The Sweeest Punch, wherein Bill Frisell took the Costello/Bacharach compositions and found the guts among the strings and things). He recorded with the Jazz Passengers and the Fairfield Four, shared the stage with Tony Bennett and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. Basically he did pretty much everything except what was expected of him. (more...)

Elvis Flashes Cruel Smile (VH1)

In the late 1970s, Elvis Costello wore a punk snarl to go along with his sharp suits and horn-rimmed glasses. Twenty-five years later, the prolific troubadour has replaced it with something more subtly sinister.... (read more )

Conversation with Lou Reed

New York Times offers you the 'chance' to watch their hour long interview with Lou Reed, for $6.95 - another interesting twist to financing journalism. Better than never having access to the source interview, I guess. If it were EC I'd reluctantly pay.

CMJ looks at new Costello Re-issues

More Elvis Costello Reissues On The Way
Rhino Entertainment is going into phase three of re-releasing the entire Elvis Costello collection. Rhino, well known for its extravagant reissues including bonus tracks and rarities, is now set to unleash re-mastered copies of “Mighty Like A Rose,” “Imperial Bedroom,” and “Armed Forces,” all set for a Nov. 19 street date. All three albums are being issued as double-discs with a single disc price tag; the first CD of each release is the original album, while the second disc is loaded with bonus material from the vaults. The reissues come just in time to recognize that Costello and his band, the Attractions, have been nominated for a seat in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Costello can still 'Pump It Up'

By Michael Newman

Though Elvis Costello long ago shook off the tired "angry young man" mantle, Wednesday night at Kansas City's opulent Midland Theatre, he demonstrated that there's still fire in his belly. Touring the country fronting a straight ahead rock band for the first time in a number of years, eschewing the saloon-singer balladry of recent tours, he demonstrated that he still can put his heart and soul into ripping rock and roll....
