Email Delivery Summit Notes: Warring Camps Reach Peace

Email Delivery Summit Notes: Warring Camps Reach Peace [EmailSherpa]

Turns out the biggest problem in fighting the war against spam has been the giant battle lines drawn between all the participants. For the most part, marketers, email broadcast firms, ISPs, and filter program firms rarely spoke to each other. We all heard that people on the "other side" thought of us as bad guys, and we focused on how to get around them.

It turned into an iron curtain-style cold war.

"It was really eye opening for some people in the room to hear an ISP rep say, 'You know, we really don't want to block you.' Before, for the sending community, we'd been told everyone at ISPs were out to eat your firstborn," one attendee told me.

So what's their solution specifically?

Everyone agreed that they would share direct phone numbers and private email addresses so they could communicate better. Yup, it's basically that simple.

This is a very good thing.

Kudos to my friend Ian Oxman and the other brave souls that entered this meeting feeling that they had a problem with the other but discovered that they had much in common. I remember sitting in many meetings with MAPS back in 1999-2000 -- meetings which quickly generated into staring contests...and accomplished nothing of value. Back in 99 I was the co-chair of AIM's Council For Responsible Email and in 2000 I was a board member of RECA (Responsible Electronic Communications Alliance), both great marketing sector efforts to create a positive working relationship.

On Tuesday when Ian told me that he was on his way to the meeting I didn't hold much hope...in fact, didn't hold any hope of a meeting of like minded humans. Jimmy Carter would be proud!

Topic blogs with RSS

Topic blogs with RSS [BookBlog]

Artima Technology has set up a nifty experiment using RSS to create aggregate blogs for techology topics like Perl, Python, C#, agile development, patterns, and more.

Bloggers submit their blog and choose which of 26 topics their blog resembles most closely. The problem is, most bloggers -- even bloggers who write a lot about a single topic -- tend to write about more than one thing.

The Future Of Communications According To Dave Pollard  [How To Save The World]

This post is a guide to the different media available for communicating today, and when to use each, and a forecast of how this will change in the next two decades.

Dave Pollard has a very nice habit of clarity in shifting and evolving information environments. This post is no exception.

Wired: Roll-Your-Own Net TV Takes Off

An interesting trend is afoot: online content making its way to TV. The above Wired story talks about amateur documentarians getting their digital video content aired on TV stations around the world, particularly on cable stations and in poorer countries. Interesting enough, but then today I got an email from NYCBloggers.com, saying that a local cable channel, RNN (Regional News Network), is seeking NY-area bloggers to become regular commentators on their program.
