Update
Well it seems that mom is holding on and has passed the crisis period. She is now on dialysis, since her kidneys failed, and that seems to have stabilized her. She now has a feeding tube so she is getting stronger too. I am relieved somewhat that she is no longer on the brink of death, so now I can function a bit better. But I am saddened by the pain and nausea she experiences daily and am worried about the unhopeful future. This stuff used to happen to others, but now major illness is touching my family and I am beginning to understand what so many people go through. Our society doesn't teach much how to handle illness and dying, but it needs to be taught since death touches everybody's lives. I sure could have been more prepared for this and so could have my mom.
