WiFi Competition Has Arrived.
Several vendors including IPWireless have commercial 3G UMTS / TDD (Time Division Duplex) high speed products. The IPWireless mobile PCMCIA card gives users download speeds of up to 3 Mbps and their base station offers data rates up to 16 Mbps, with higher speed promised in the future. The system operates on IMT-2000 3G bands and the unregulated 2.5GHz band, and in future on other bands too.
Siemens and NEC have pioneered the development of TDD networks and can offer a turn-key system implementation.
Another promising TDD development is the Wireless 3G 4 free project, which implements the 3GPP TDD high chip rate access stratum protocols with an IP-based interconnection with off-the-shelf 802.11 WLAN solutions. The hardware/software platforms currently run under the RTLinux real-time operating system using public-domain IPv4 and IPv6 protocol implementations.
TDD system deployment has already started and will provide an alternative to Wifi networks. TDD uses a combined time division and code division multiple access scheme, has asymmetric uplink-downlink data speed and is best suited for pico and micro cell coverage. TDD systems feature robust GSM / WCDMA network security and can be deployed by 3G carriers with frequency licenses, or anyone using unregulated bands. This will place TDD services and coverage in the same competitive space as Wifi. Let the battle begin!
