Palm and RIMM pull a Microsoft The two troubled PDA makers are licensing their operating systems as their hardware businesses crumble. By Dave Sterman, equity research columnist
If it worked for Microsoft (MSFT), it can work for us.
That's the logic behind the changing business strategies at Palm (PALM) and Research in Motion (RIMM). Just as Microsoft won the PC wars of the 1980s by licensing its operating system, these firms are placing more emphasis on licensing their proprietary operating systems and less emphasis on their hardware offerings.
