Wi-Fi Operators and 3G

Re-made contact today with old friend from Lucent/Zingo days now working over at Concourse Communications who provide public Wi-Fi networks for airports. Their model is that they provide and manage the Wi-Fi infrastructure for entire airport and any Wi-Fi usages get routed through them as an operator, whether it be traveller, airline, airport authority - anyone wanting Wi-Fi service in the premises.

Obviously this is an area that challenges 3G WAN services (e.g. UMTS) but is a here-and-now technology with teeth. I fully expect in the future to be able to catch a "wireless limo/cab" and stay connected via Wi-Fi limo-to-airport-to-plane-to-airport-to-limo-to-hotel-.....ur, to company lan.....wait a minute, do we really need UMTS?

Of course, with "Wireless Blogging" one can get to tell all and sundry about the entire experience....

Meet you at Orange developer's forum 8th November 2002

I just registered to go to the next ODF meeting. It's a feedback session on GPRS and applications developed for the Orange network. I'll be interested to see what the developers have to say and to poke around to see who's making any money. Sadly, at the last ODF the GPRS product manager announced a reasonable (though small) number of GPRS handsets being sold but only a tiny number being connected. This didn't reflect very well on the reality of wireless applications in the mass market thus far.

T-Mobile have secret masts hidden in petrol stations [The Independent]

Not quite sure what the public will make of this discovery, especially as garages are plastered all over with signs requesting mobiles be switched off. Article says McDonalds also has masts in their outlets - well, maybe that's how they irradiate the beef!
