In-person Emergent Democracy Happening

Last night we had another Emergent Democracy Happening.  This time it was in-person, a BoF session at Etech.  Joi (for good reason) and others who were not their physically were busy and the hotel couldn't seem to give us a phone line, almost all the participants were in the room.  As a result, there was less use of software, with the exception of chat although it was less active than in times past.  The conversation flowed naturally with many differing points of view.

Only 3 of the 30 or so participants had attended one before, so we had a good chance to expose people to the topic and engage anew.  The best outcome of the session was a desire to identify technologies that could further political participation and accountability.  Hopefully this will emerge over the next three days and geeks will take initiative to make them happen.

Ray is Back

Well, I'm back.  It's been so, so long.  Today I received enough e-encouragement as a result of this c|net piece that I realized it's about time that I take another run at the blog...Actually, I just severed my upstream connection to the blogosphere as I dramatically increased my effective consumption thanks in particular to Syndirella, SharpReader and .NET....But I do miss being part of this fascinating social fabric.  To continue my own explorations, but also to share with you some amazing stories that have emerged from the Groove user community over the past six months.  I think you'll get a kick out of them....Time to jack back into the conversation, albeit this time as a bit more of an HPB... [Ray Ozzie's Weblog]

Ray has a key observation here: to participate in the social fabric you have to be more than a consumer.

Space/Time Blog Visualization

Blogosphere visualized. Mikel Maron has a cool visualization of the Blogosphere. You see on the world map in real time what people post on their weblogs. Is it really real time? Anyway, very neat with a different perspective like that. I am fond of global displays. That's how I'd like to get all sorts of information. A display of the world that you can then drill into, to look closer at different parts. [Ming the Mechanic]

Really cool way to view post streams and navigate to them.

Joi Invests in Movable Type
Ben and Mena are now family.... Six Apart (Ben and Mena's company, the creator of Movable Type) just announced their hosted service, TypePad. They also announced that Anil has joined the team. Also somewhere in the announcement is a bit about my company, Neoteny investing in Six Apart. I'm very excited both as a Movable Type user/fan and as an investor.

This is probably one of the most exciting investments we've made and I particularly like the fact that I started as a user, sponsor, friend and finally an investor. I really like Ben and Mena and wish we could find more deals that were as cool as this.

Congratulations and lots of thanks to the whole team who worked to make this deal happen! [Joi Ito's Web]

A great thing for blogging and this space in general.  The hosted service will bring the best blogging platform to more than just geeks.  Anil is a great addition.  And with smart investors behind them, Ben and Mena should be able to raise their baby to make an even greater difference in this world.
