Acquisition transactions may trigger a change in employment status for workers would need to apply for new visas prior to the acuisition. Acquirors often in the past did not ask for representations about the visa status of non-US citizens. This story tells us why we should, especially in an industry like software which employs many foreign nationals. This story also suggests some downsides to the harsh immigration policies that have resulted from the 9/11 reaction. Because the unintended consequences are diffuse, we may not be able to see them.
