Friday, August 29, 2003The following is a summary of the performance attributes of the PowerGenix Ni-Zn battery.

Energy Density: the PowerGenix Ni-Zn battery has up to two times the energy density of Ni-Cd batteries when measured either by weight (Watt hours per kilogram) or by volume (Watt hours per liter). In other words, the PowerGenix Ni-Zn battery will provide 2 times the range of a similar size and weight Ni-Cd battery. |

Power Density: at almost full discharge (20% charge remaining) battery can still deliver over 250W/kg. |
|
Lower Cost: price estimates of approximately $250 per kilowatt-hour are substantially lower than all other advanced rechargeable batteries. |

Safety: Ni-Zn is a safe chemistry that is abuse tolerant. |
|
Fast Charge: the combination Ni-Zn battery and charger allow the system to achieve full charge in less than two hours and at least 60% charge in less than one hour. This is an important feature for “opportunistic charging,” as is often typical with cordless power tools, electronics and many other applications. |

Cycle life: The service life of the battery is expected to be better than most Ni-Cd batteries, especially in situations where use is intermittent. |

Almost Infinite Shelf Life: Lead-acid batteries sulfate, which limits their operating life and shelf life. The PowerGenix Ni-Zn batteries have an almost infinite shelf life. |

Environmental: nickel and zinc can be recycled easily and profitably. The zinc electrode contains no lead, cadmium or mercury. The clean nature of this battery makes it an ideal replacement for lead and cadmium batteries. |

It is clear that the different chemistries have very different tolerances to high rate discharge. Technologies that deliver high power without significant loss in energy density are capable of greater torque in power tools and have greater acceleration and hill climbing capability in transportation applications. Nickel Zinc Battery: "Manufacturing the PowerGenix battery utilizes existing Ni-Cd processes, techniques and equipment to significantly reduce time-to-market and eliminate costly equipment design steps. This highly leveraged approach takes advantage of many of the cost reduction strategies used in Ni-MH and Ni-Cd batteries, particularly those relating to the pasted foam positive electrode. The replacement of cadmium or metal hydride with a patent-pending PowerGenix pasteable zinc electrode has significant benefits. Most immediate is a 25% higher voltage that lowers the cell requirement per battery. "
