This is my first step on a journey of understanding ... where it will end I have no idea. Curiosity killed the cat, hopefully my curiosity about Blogs, RSS and OPML will not be so fatal!
As I write my first entry I am still trying to workout why I am writing this weblog and who will ultimately read it?
If this blog is purely for my benefit then is this the best medium to record my daily thoughts or is there a better medium? Have blogs got longevtivity? Will everything I write here be available for others to read in the future?
Strangely today on BBCi there was a related report about Microsoft's Research project called "MyLife Project" run by Gordon Bell. The projects aim is to produce software that will enable people to record every digital transaction throughout their lives. i.e email, credit card purchases, photos etc.
Why anyone would want to record that much information I am not sure ... but as we move towards a totally digital world then "what you decide record and store rather than if or how; that will be the question?" ...
So who (in my opinion) has got this blog medium worked out. Well blogs from people like Ray Ozzie, Dave Winer and Paul Bausch are worth reading especially Ray's article on the role of blogs in the digital spectrum compared to email and instant messaging etc.

There is also a good book called "the practical advice Weblog handbook" by Rebecca Blood which is a very good starting point for anyone wanting to create their own weblog. I have just finished it and it has inspired me to learn more about blogging and make this site worth reading.
In fact her blog "The Pocket" is a fantastic example of how a blog can work, be maintained and entertain.
Sadly Rebecca's other book which I got at the same time - How blogs are changing our culture - is sadly not very good at all and is infact a dated account of how weblogs have evolved in the last few years. Most of the chapters are written by other authors and are in fact archive snippets from their weblogs.
