I woke for the third time in as many days wondering where I was. Actually, that happens a lot in my life. Well, I was indoors, at least. I was on a black velvet couch in a large room of some country house or large cabin. There was warmth from a fireplace which now contained only embers. As I pulled myself to a sitting position, my body felt the pain. I was stiff and sore, bruised, and caked with now-dried mud. All this from bumping into trees in the foggy forest! I went and stirred the embers and placed on several small dry logs. It was good wood. The logs snapped into a full blaze.
Stretching some of the stiffness out of my body, I turned to look out a large window that faced the valley and the river closeby. Outside on the porch rail, a gray bird with a bright red crest alighted several feet away from me. It had clear black eyes, and looked very intelligent. I had never seen a bird like that before. Then, as suddenly as it came, it flew off in a line of undulating flight.
As I watched it fly off, I thought to myself...I need to take a bath and get all this dirt off me. I don't know where anything is, and I don't hear that man stirring anywhere in the house...
It was then that I saw the note lying on the coffee table, with a rather large dandelion weed next to it. It had two open flowers and three large puff-balls. I blew on a puff-ball, and its fluffy dander dispersed across the room; I felt incredibly silly. Opening the note, I read it:
Dandelion:
I had an early appointment this morning which I could not avoid. Follow the smell of coffee into the kitchen and help yourself. Also find on the counter bread for toast, and fresh fruit. Help yourself to anything you like in the fridge, except the small can on the lower right-hand side. That’s the cat’s food, and he gets upset if anyone else eats it. Down the right-hand hall in the master bath, find towels and accessories laid out for your bath. The separate basin is to help you deal with mud-control. I laid out some clean clothes… they are mine of course, so do your best for now. We will get your clothes washed when I come back. Blow on the puff-balls and make a wish!
Mi Casa Su Casa,
Geo.
Geo, I thought. What kind of name is that? Well he seems like a harmless enough fellow…
