Real Life in Santa Rosa: My Home

My home here in Santa Rosa is different than the one I had in  Forestville .  It is near the center of town, just north of the fairgrounds.  It is the yellow duplex two houses up from the corner of my street.  I moved here in the Fall of 2000.  It is a beautiful place, and I enjoy living in it.  The downstairs houses my office, kitchen, and living room/T’ai Chi studio.  The vaulted, square-spiral staircase is a funky space that I have turned into a mini art gallery.  The upstairs is wonderful, too: a mini library in the foyer of the bedroom holds most of my books.  The bedroom proper is ample for all my needs and is decorated in the African décor I had in my studio apartment. There is a strange dormer in the bedroom.  It is 30 inches wide and 4 feet deep.  I knew exactly what to do with that!  I put my meditation mat and cushion in there, and it is a beautiful as well as functional meditation nook.  The bathroom is conveniently off the bedroom, and has all the thingys a bathroom needs, most notably a tub, which I had not had in 10 years.  This is as wonderful an apartment as anyone could wish for.  I am happy to have it.

The Continuing Story

About a half-hour later, the storm began to abate.  As it did the air cleared quickly.  There was nothing left that could be blown from the forest at lesser speeds.   Geo watched from behind the rock.  The clouds rolled past and the sky began to clear.  He looked down at the lodge.  It looked okay from where he was.  He could imagine the things that had blown away, though.  Potted plants, deck furniture, shingles, anything not nailed down.  And yet, he knew he was very lucky.   He could tell by the smell of the air that the lightning had not caused any forest fires.  The wind would have carried the smoke down here already. Perhaps it blew out any forest fires. He hoped the new lady had just stayed tight in the lodge.

A few minutes later, everything was still.  Geo poked his head out of his hiding place.  He stood.  Things seemed still and safe in the valley now.  He began to pick his way through the underbrush and fallen trees, heading home.
