The Secret Life of Coffee Cups
Six coffee cups are sitting on the shelf as dawn approaches.
One cup sighs. "God, I hate this part of the day," he says.
"What do you mean?" says another. "This time of day is loaded with expectation--which one of us will our Mistress choose today? I hope it is me! It is my highest destiny to be filled with coffee, and caressed by the hand of the Lady of the House!"
Another cup says "I feel so violated when I am 'used' that way; I know it is what I am 'made for' but that doesn't make it any easier to bear..."
The fourth cup keeps his thoughts to himself, but he is thinking: "Is that a very high destiny? Why was I born a coffee cup? Will I have another life after this one is over? How can I tap into the "power of being"?
A fifth cup seethes with anger, and looks for the nearest possible escape route.
By the time the Mistress has descended her staircase and arrived in the kitchen, only three of the cups are still on the shelf, ready for duty. The other three have "called in sick" to work. The Mistress looks into the cupboard and pulls out a cup, almost instinctively. She stops for a second, looks at the cup, and thinks I wonder why I always seem to choose this cup? It seems to be the only one I like. Perhaps I should just toss the others...
And, once again, the same cup is chosen by the Mistress. What an incredible life I am having, thinks Mr. Cup, I seem to get chosen almost every day! And he sighs pleasurably as once again he feels the lady's touch.

On Good Days...
I spent most of the day today writing. I finished Phillip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials. It was quite good, especially considering the breadth and scope of the subjects he dealt with. I did a full review of the last of the three books, The Amber Spyglass. You can read my full review here.
Are you familiar with Epinions.com? They are a very good source of information on just about anything, from books and movies, to digital cameras, restaurants, and places to sight see! I like the site very much, and usually contribute book reviews.
