Quiet Rest

With the vivid, swirling images gone from his mind, Geo now fell into a deep and dreamless sleep. He rolled over into a more sleepworthy position.  Shiara took a long look at him; his dark hair, his handsome features.  His flannel shirt and blue jeans would never indicate that he was a psychologist, just as her wild red hair and expressive face would never reveal the feelings that she had for him. Not while he was awake, or anyone else was around.

She sighed.

She went back to her cross-legged position by the end of the couch.  She closed her eyes and started breathing deeply, trying to find her center once again.  “I used to be a goddess,” she thought to herself.  “I feel so powerless now.  I wonder am I any good at all?”

It was pointless to wonder how long she would be here.  That only made her anxious.  She closed her eyes and breathed in and out.  It could have been a half an hour, or it could have been a century.

She heard an odd, scratchy sort of noise, and she opened her eyes and looked around.  She heard the scratching again, and then she saw it.  There was a small door… well…part of a door?  Part of a drawing of a door!  As she watched, the door seemed to draw itself.  Shiara had a feeling that it was not drawing itself, but that someone, somewhere on the opposite side of spacetime was drawing that door.  And whoever it was seemed to be a pretty good artist.

The door had inset panels, and an old-fashioned round doorknob, and the light and shadow were being drawn on the door as well. If she had known the work of Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland would have come to her mind.  Tiny little hinges were drawn.  Suddenly the door became real and its handle began to turn.  Shiara was fascinated, but she kept her distance.  The door opened just a little bit, and it seemed that it was dark on the other side.  Darkness, and droning like a bee hive, and then a smell… incense!  It was perhaps a temple of some sort.

The door opened abruptly and a furry creature in a black robe walked through.  He closed the door very quietly, and gave a bow of respect toward it.  Now he turned to face the Gray Planet.  Shiara was in shock!  She wasn’t looking at the new door anymore!  She was looking into the Furry Face of the creature in the robe.  It was her long-lost friend, Pigmet!
