Dharma

A small thud was heard inside the temple as Pigmet closed the door.  The inside of the temple was dark, lit only by skylights and paper screens, punctuated by the flame of a candle here and there.  The little zafu in the second row was empty.  Where was Pigmet? As the group turned from their positions of meditation and made themselves comfy among the cushions, Jakusho Kwong-Roshi spoke:

“This morning a very small finch visited my window and sang some very beautiful songs. I don’t know how that works exactly, but it is definitely nature’s way. The finch is so small but it has such a brilliant, moving song. Again and again it sang until eventually it flew away. It wasn’t the duration of the singing that so touched me. It was just how it sang. It sang its heart out. How do you sing your heart out? In other words, how can you be heartful? How can you be wholeheartedly present in the moment, who and what and where you are?"
