Big Blue iron at sea
Attention [Reuters] is given this week to an IBM supercomputer that consists of 368 AIX computers connected together with a total of about 3,000 64-bit PowerPC microprocessors. It will be built for the U.S. Department of Defense for war simulation, weather forecasting and other applications, and be housed at the Naval Oceanographic Office Major Shared Resource Center in Mississippi. This machine would vie to join the Top 10 list of the World’s biggest computer. Bigger news would be to hear that IBM had surpassed the fastest computer, which is located at the Earth Simulator Center in Japan and is made by NEC Corp.
