I’d call this the year that nobody lauged all at the same time. The United States was a theatre where bits of laughter rippled through the crowd, but never comes the big communal guffaw. Lack of unity leads to a 30-year-war, and a small-margin endorsement of said war. Like football, winning by 2 points is as good as 20.

The best new music of 2004 encountered:
Clapton’s tribute to Robert Johnson; the lost Hound Dog Taylor live sessions; Madeline Peyroux’s second album; the essential Dean Martin; Joe Brown at the Tribute to George concert. Best book: Dylan’s Crhonicles. Best TV: Allsison Krause on Emmies. Old time music talent discovery of the year: Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant.

Perusing this site this year: A lot of robots; very fast rocket planes; big news from waterful Mars; war in Iraq which was seeping into adjoining environs; death of Crick. Biggest page on the site was that one addresed at the passing of Bernie Ransil, sadly.

Jim Haas visited. We went to the Peabody. Jake and I saw early Japanes postcards. Got to Lexington-Concord again - a long time goal.

We also saw true bluesman Carey Bell along wih Mark Natflin and others at the Boston Blues Fest. I learned about bar codes and the early history of cybernetics. family health was thinning. found a new job. The future would be more bright - without a smoldering Mideast. Bu I don’t mind seeing the past go this time.
