Municipalities plan free wireless access: The New York Times's John Markoff reports that several municipalities are looking into deploying free wireless networks as glue for businesses and people. Long Beach, Calif., is one of the first larger ciites, but more are on the way. Tim Pozar, a microwave and Wi-Fi expert, also announces in the article the availability this week of a strong signal from San Bruno Mountain south of San Francisco.

Colorado Walks the Last Mile
Glenwood Springs finishes municipal network
It was a difficult battle, but Glenwood Springs, Colorado residents are the proud owners of their own last mile municipal broadband network, paid for by the city's electrical department. The town signed a contract with Aspenworks Ltd. to act as the ISP for the town's fiber, and spent much of the fall finalizing and testing network connections. Despite arguments with resellers and allegations that the city paid too much, the system has area residents pleased as punch.
