When I first read the above I couldn't help thinking that there was someone who made a pitch to Cambridge University Press saying something along the lines of "you have to stop thinking that you are in publishing business... you have to starting thinking that you are in authenicating knowledge business."
Then I thought that FATHOM was created to counteract the forces of MIT's OpenCourseWare but then I realized that two are quite different. MIT's OpenCourseWare is not being sold as an education, whereas FATHOM allows you to add a seminar into your shopping cart. I believe FATHOM is trying to hone into the 'Lifelong Learning' market. While I enjoy having free access to the Skeptical Environmentalist, I'm still a Skeptical Educationalist.
