On Doughnuts, where the Theory devised by Pok behind the Origin of this particular Snack is Explained.

Doughnuts. Everyone loves them, nobody knows where they come from. In this text I will attempt to deduce the origins of this common snack food.
Lets look at the word, Doughnut. It consists of two separate words, 'dough' and 'nut'. Dough implies that the doughnut has something to do with dough, a mixture of flour and water. The common doughnut is made from dough.
The second part of the word, 'nut' is more of a mystery. I first consulted a dictionary as to the exact meaning of the word.

Nut- noun. A fruit containing a seed or kernel within a hard covering, or a small block of wood, metal, plastic etc with a grooved hole, to be screwed onto the end of a bolt.

Firstly, a doughnut is not a fruit. It contains no seed, and the common (fresh) unglazed doughnut has no hard outer shell. Therefore, the first definition of 'nut' is inappropriate. So, logically, the second definition is more correct.
The doughnut has a hole in the center. Many people have wondered why it is there.
My theory, is that the hole in the center was originally grooved. The original purpose of the doughnut was to screw onto (and secure) the end of a bolt. I justify this by the following:

  • Methods of cooking the doughnut have changed constantly, as has the dough used. The overall effect of this is the doughnut has become softer as time improves methods. If we are tracing the history of the doughnut backwards, then the doughnut is getting harder. Therefore, doughnuts were once quite solid, and more capable of attaching to, staying on, and securing a bolt.
  • Dough is and was cheap and recyclable.
  • Dough begins quite malleable, and when cooked, goes hard. This allows easy attachment and moulding of the grooved hole.
  • The custom of putting sugar onto the exterior of the doughnut may have originated from the friction - enhancing properties of grains of sugar, which may have been used to help prevent the doughnut from slipping off the bolt.

Social implications: If you live in, work in, or own a building that has bolts used in the construction, particularly buildings erected before the doughnut was used for eating, then watch out for mice.

An extra note on doughnuts in SWmud:
Some machines dispense doughnuts on SWmud. These doughnuts are often falavoured as the name of the person who bought the doughnut, ie If Bill bought one the doughnut would be Bill flavoured. Youve all seen them and you all know what im talking about. :)
The word 'nut' is also used in slang, to indicate an unintelligent person, or someone who is prone to doing silly, pointless things.
Lets look at the word again. 'dough' and 'nut' I have previously made the point that the word 'dough' fits due to there being dough in the ingredients of a doughnut. If we get the doughnut mentioned above, it is Bill flavoured, implying that there is some Bill in the ingredients. To make the second part of the word fit, we can consider Bill a nut.
Therefore, anybody on this mud that has ever bought a doughnut, is unintelligent and does silly, pointless things.
