More and more I see people clutching their cell phones as a major source of comfort or something. Saw this comment on Dan Bricklin's Blog and realized how true this comment was. Today I went out of the door at 7:30 for appointments and left my cel phone in my other coat pocket. I spent the whole day lost until I was able to go by and pick up my phone. I had left my Visor at the office and had neither of my cel phones or my laptop. I felt isolated. I had some of these feelings while in Europe while on vacation last month and also 2 years ago while in Europe and Asia. My cel phone is the connection to those I love, do business with, and to my life. It is amazing how difficult it is when someone you love becomes no longer instantly available. Maybe we expect too much...but part of this is a grasp for security in a rapid and insecure world.

The cell phone gives them some sense of security. I feel that it represents a lifeline to the rest of our circle of important people, and we treat it as such. It's a space warp that connects us to others we need as we go through life. In today's complicated world, we can juggle our disconnected lives and make them connected by using technology like cell phones, email, IM, and digital cameras. I may be very busy and never be sure where I'll be at any given time, but that doesn't affect my being able to coordinate with others. ("I'm on my way and it looks like I'll get to the building around 8 pm. When I get there I'll call you on your cell phone and we'll figure out where to meet.")

A new font is being created to make available over 7000 techincal symbols and characters to engineers and scientists. This will make possible the inclusion of these within the text of any document without resorting to elaborate work arounds. The STIX font promises the solution of a major problem for the sharing of scientific work over the Internet.

Interesting article about Microsoft's Weblog Software.  On the business side, though, Microsoft has pieces in place that put it a full year ahead of any competitor.  Anil Dash indicates that Microsoft has the underpinnings to support weblogs in a manner, yet doesn't seem to get the whole picture. Their push is to sell more OS and software not to enrich the current enviroment.
