Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911-2004)
I've spent a lot of time this week trying to decide what, if anything, I can add to what's been said about President Reagan. I was never a Reaganite. I didn't vote for him in either election. I was pretty much a knee-jerk liberal in those days. (I didn't vote for Dubya's dad the first time around - I did the second)
My wife worked on Reagan's campaign against Jimmy Carter in 1980, so we obviously have differing views on the policies put in place during his tenure. But I don't think that at this time it's right to discuss those differences (and I still have them). I'll save any commentary I have for another time.
Let me just say this: Ronald Reagan came into office with an agenda that was based upon his beliefs. It wasn't based on political expediency or the catering to special interests. Whether you agreed with him or disagreed with him, his policies were fueled by his vision of what America could and should be. And he made us feel proud to be Americans again, after so many years of self-doubt and angst.
President Reagan, may you rest in peace.
