Halfway there. I've sold 150 copies of NewtSync so far. 150 more and I'll have sold my target and will release the source to the world. I wonder what the term for this kind of licensing is. Right now it's shareware but it will become free and open-source, under the non-restrictive BSD license, when I've sold 300 copies total. Hostageware, perhaps? Nah, that makes me seem far too sinister. I like this concept though, because it sets a precedent where software ends up being open-source but someone gets paid for it. And when the software hits 1.0, someone else can add their own features and sell the product if they wish. Or they can contribute their changes back to the community.
Many thanks to the 150 people that have already helped to prove that this business model can indeed work. |

I just updated NewtSync to version 0.3k. I was getting some reports of an NSRangeException error. I'm hoping that this update fixes that issue. Plus it fixes a couple of other minor issues. I haven't merged the major fixes into this release because they're not finished yet. Wow... just noticed what time it is... I should really get some sleep. Just trying to ride the manic rush while it lasts. 12:53:32 AM |
