Review of movie Solaris - both of them

I watched the 30 year old Russian version of Solaris (directed by Tarkovsky) Friday night, then my wife, friends and I went out Saturday afternoon to see the new version staring George Clooney (who was OK, but not great) and Natascha McElhone (who was very good).

The original Russian version of the movie, which was released in 1972, was a response to Stanley Kubrick's 2001. Tarkovsky thought that 2001 was based too much on technology and not enough on human emotions.

The new version of Solaris, which director Steven Soderbergh based on the original movie) features more "eye candy" - interesting sets and beautiful CG scenes of Solaris. Still, both movies seemed to place more emphasis on how people deal with very difficult situations that on science fiction.

Anyway, I don't want to spoil the ending of either movie, so I will just say that I enjoyed them both!
