InfoWorld quotes "Windows apologist" Paul Thurrott's dismissal of Panther as offering "nothing in the way of usability improvements". In his Longhorn FAQ he goes on to state:
Today, Windows XP and its task-based interface are far superior to anything in Mac OS X. In the future, Longhorn will further distance Windows from OS X. From a graphical standpoint, there won't be any comparison. As Microsoft revealed at the PDC 2003 conference, Longhorn is far more impressive technically than Panther.
And I would guess there are other non-shipping operating systems even more impressive than Longhorn. How about we all agree not to compare Longhorn with Panther any more? Panther shipped last month and Longhorn is expected to ship in 2005 or 2006. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that MacOS could have some even more competitive features by then. I'd guess we'd be at something like MacOS 10.5 (It is 10.3 right now.) by the time Longhorn ships. Could Dominic Giampaolo have something to compete with WinFS by then? Could Dave Hyatt have something to compete with XAML? Could any number of other unexpected features also come along, a la Exposé? ... Uh, yeah.

BTW, what is the "task-based" interface in Windows XP?
