Pre-Schools Benefits Are ClearAn Investment in Children Yields Life-Long Returns by Melynda Wilcox The benefits of early childhood education for at-risk children are numerous and well-documented: Lower rates of crime and drug use, higher rates of school success and graduation, higher wages later in life, and less dependency on welfare programs, to name a few. Not only do these children reap the benefits of a brighter future, society as a whole is better off as well. The latest follow-up results from the Perry Preschool Project in Michigan, for example, show even higher returns on investment in early childhood education than were previously measured. Now forty years old, the Perry Project has cut crime, welfare and other costs by so much that it generates an estimated $17 in benefits for every $1 invested. Well-structured preschool programs for at-risk children, as William Gale and Isabel Sawhill of the Brookings Institution have so aptly written in The Washington Post, have estimated rates of return “that would make a venture capitalist envious.”
