This weekend, I had the pleasure of having my mind blown. I went to the largest retrospective to date of Lucian Freud. Six decades of his painting currently in Los Angeles at MOCA. A lot is said and written about his subjects in which he magically injects humanity, where the work becomes more than a representation. When you look at photos of his work you can read the intensity and humanity of his subjects, however the surface is not represented. The surface of his paintings in person are mesmerizing, an unbelievable dance of depth and movement. I would get my eyes as close as I could to them while maintaining focus. It’s really hard to describe just how amazing this was, a spiritual experience for me. I had the chance to speak with the man who had hung the show and is Lucian’s biographer and friend. So of course I asked many questions about the way Lucian works. He only paints when he has a sitter, does not do a stroke after the model is gone, the sitter dictates the composition by the way they settle in front of him, no thumb nail or comps are created, he starts from the middle and works his way out, he spend a minimum of a 100 hours on a painting, a huge amount of time is spent on his palette mixing (you can see this as the color on the paintings looks as if every stroke is a different mixture). Go see this if you can. There is a great catalog book for the show.
