The Aesthetic Imperative

Here's an article from Wired about how design is king. I should be getting a raise any day now.

This is why Sony doesn't have tablets.

New laptops from Sony. They are all about the experience of entertainment. But I don't know why these have to be mutually exclusive. Everyone is always trying to put things in buckets. It makes choices hard for consumers. Yes, I agree you have to make things simple, but i think these companies are still thinking through business unit instead of concepting for how users might really use things. I say its about the aggregation. Who says tablets are just for business? is that to justify the premium cost? Who says tablet's can't be media center pcs? the business unit who is targeting the business customer says that's incongruent with entertainment because entertainment is for consumers and not for business. Phooey. That's also why my kid won't  get a tablet until she starts business school, or medical school. Because business is also not necessarily congruent with education. But think about it, what a perfect school machine for kids. Learn to write, read your text books, take notes, chat with your friends.... And a perfect mobile solution, too: tablet + media center and might as well throw the stinger guys in there so i can use it as a phone. That's mobility and how people would use tablets. When you make these lifestyle leaps to have xp with you all the time, then you have to ask what will our users want to do now? Business people are people too, they have lives outside of work, and if you have a tablet, you're gonna take it home, and when users take it home, do you want them to be using it or put it down? If this is going to be with me all the time, let's get the other stuff i need in here, so i don't have to carry any other devices, this thing is big enough and powerful enough to handle all my needs.
