Ko Mak
I spent 3 nights on Ko Mak island in the gulf of Thailand, near Ko Chang. We picked this island because of its close proximity to Bangkok (4 hour drive, plus 3 1/2 hour boat ride). We also picked it because of its isolation - - meaning relatively few tourists. The travellers that we did meet were either from Thailand or Germany. The view above is one of the many beaches, and as you can see the beaches were mostly vacant. The waters around the island are as blue as they get. The thing I found most amazing was being able to see the bottom of gulf in 20 feet of water. Also, great snorkeling if it interests you. The center of Ko Mak is a rubber tree plantation and there are about 7 bungalow "resorts."
We stayed at the Au Kau Resort and our hut (one of about 8) was approximately 60 yards from the waters edge. 800 Baht for a bungalow that sleeps 4 (approximately $20 per night). Electricity in the huts are turned off from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. If you're looking for a more luxurious place I suggest you try a more touristy island - - and expect to feel like you never left the U.S.
I recommend you bring a few good books and a deck of cards. Rent a moped and ride the dirt roads through the rubber tree plantations, island hop or snorkel on any of the nearby islands if you are so inclined. There's only one internet connection on the island and it's on the other side and it's expensive. So if you go, do not plan on sitting on the internet, but then again, with these sunsets why would you want to.
