A scandal has erupted in Germany about Günter Grass having served in the Waffen-SS for a few months at the end of WW II. He was 17 then. Hadn't fired a single shot. Can you blame a child of that age for falling under the spell of propaganda at that time and place? At least he did what was right after the war and maybe it is this small blemish, this shame, that led him to write those magnificent books.
In my personal opinion he is not a lesser writer now. Germany had better watch the developments in its own country.
Independent: "The citizens of the small German town of Delmenhorst have failed at the last minute to thwart a notorious far-right group's plans to buy a hotel overlooking a park for use as a training centre for neo-Nazis from across the country."
