Today about 300,000 people demonstrated in Amsterdam for a decent future, against the plans of the government to break down social security. From all over the country people gathered in a spirit of solidarity. Train traffic alone brought 150,000 demonstrators to the city. Thousands could not enter the Museum Square because it was already loaded. At two o'clock the last people entered the Square. The inner city was crowded with people. The success of this demonstration reminds me of the numbers present during the demo against cruise missiles in 1983, which boasted more than half a million people. This is the Amsterdam I love.
