"January is named after the Roman god Janus, who was always shown as having two heads.  He looked back to the last year and forward to the new one.  The Roman New Year festival was called the Calends, and people decorated their homes and gave each other gifts. "
- New Year's Day Webpage

We do share one gift from the gods: the ability to stand outside Now in mind and memory to envision the future and remember the past.  This power is both a blessing and a curse, a source of both freedom and constraint, a cause of both hope and stoic resignation.
