World Brain
In 1937, HG Wells wrote an article for the new Encyclopédie Française entitled " World Brain: The Idea of a Permanent World Encyclopaedia" where he points out that "there is no practical obstacle whatever now to the creation of an efficient index to all human knowledge, ideas and achievements, to the creation, that is, of a complete planetary memory for all mankind. And not simply an index; the direct reproduction of the thing itself can be summoned to any properly prepared spot."
Well it is amazing that he came up with that in 1937!
Perhaps the British Pathe group has made a significant contribution to the Internet that takes us a little closer to Wells' dream.
A Peek at History, Piracy-Free. Media company British Pathe, which produced 3,500 newsreels between 1910 and 1970, puts its entire collection online. But rather than adding digital copyright protection, the company simply stamped its logo on each downloadable clip. By Patrick Di Justo. [Wired News]
