PSYOPS

One of the little known important components of warfare since 500 BC has been the psychological aspects of the conflict. These range from intimidation to serious and sophisticated attempts to undermine the opponent. In more modern warfare, this also includes efforts to try to warn civilians to stay out of harm's way while simultaneously influencing morale.

A new original article from the Medscape Psychiatry eJournal called
PSYOPS: Psychological Operations, was published today. This interesting and informative review written by Ronnie Stangler, MD, current president of the American Association for Technology in Psychiatry offers some interesting perspectives and reminds us that there are some very sophisticated and well organized approaches to human behavior in warfare. There is also a technology at play that ranges from the simple to the futuristic. In a related story, one of the seemingly futuristic technologies that have become a reality is directed energy weapons that was described in a recent posting from the TechKnow weblog.

Several people who have read the PSYOPS article have told me that they find the concepts somewhat haunting - very much like a seeing a movie that continues to gnaw at your daydreams.
