According to JAMA, drinking light-to-moderate amounts of alcohol appears to protect against dementia in older adults. In a study of over 700 elderly adults, Kenneth J. Mukamal and colleagues from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, found that 1-6 drinks of alcohol per week made a difference
Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and cognitive testing between 1992 and 1994 with regular follow ups until 1999, this prospective, population-based cohort study in 4 US communities found that the link between alcohol use and dementia was affected by gender and possession of the apolipoprotein E-e4 (APOE-e4) allele.
Also pointing out that moderation is the key, the researchers found a trend toward greater odds of dementia associated with heavier alcohol consumption was most apparent among men and participants with an apolipoprotein Ee4 allele
