Researchers from the University of California, San Diego describe that a new study published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics suggests that parents of children with social anxiety disorder prefer to have their children see a therapist for counseling rather than medication as the initial treatment approach.
Data collected from 190 parents’ opinions on social anxiety disorder treatment, along with information about their children’s levels of social anxiety and previous treatment of any kind. Interestingly, in contrast to what the scientists thought, parents of children suffering with social anxiety disorder did not have significantly different treatment preferences or attitudes about social anxiety compared with those who did not have children with the disorder.
The researchers also found that parents whose children has been previously treated with either counseling or medication were more receptive to both types of treatment and parents who had a history of emotional problems were more likely to prefer counseling for treating the social anxiety disorder.
They conclude by pointing out that "parents’ beliefs about social anxiety disorder therapies may play an essential role in how much their children benefit from treatment" As always, attitudes about treatment have a great deal to do with outcome.
