Dealing with fear
It's pretty clear that there is no room for fear in the modern
workplace. Yet we all deal with fear at one time or another. Too bad.
More to the point..... Manager's who trade on fear are weak, lame, pathetic.
I see fear way too often. A few years back I had an employee follow me
into my office after I'd been out walking around. I was just saying
hello. He was driven by fear because his previous boss never stopped by
unless there was a big problem. What he wanted to know was, "is there a
big problem."
FEAR
We can't make any progress until fear is carefully and patiently DRIVEN OUT! Hmmmmm.
In all my "reading" no one encourages the use of fear. But how to get to a "no fear" environment, that is the big issue.
Senge, The Fifth Discipline,
talks about learning some new skills. We management types are well
versed in the art of advocacy. We know how to have an idea and how to
express that idea. Many times we do that rather forcefully. Does that
work? Or does it instill fear and/or resentment. Yes and yes. At least
some of the time.
The new skill needed at work is inquiry. Ask questions. Listen. Be
patient. Let others make decisions and lend support. More than writing
about Inquiry, it is a skill that needs a lot of practice...........
