Dude, you're freakin' me out

I drive home the same way every day. I like to drive this one particular straightaway near my house because it's relatively traffic-free and I can turn down the radio, hit the gas and listen to my little car shift up through the gears.

Anyway, on this road you see a lot of deer. Sometimes, sadly, one gets hit. The carcass lies on the side of the road until it is either eaten by something else or it rots on its own. Or, I guess, some guys from the DPW pick it up. (Wow, add that to the list of Jobs I Don't Want.) As it happened, a few weeks ago a deer got hit and died on the side of the road on a large stretch of undeveloped property. I have been driving past the carcass every day, noting it in the back of my mind but really kind of pointedly avoiding looking at it.

Today I drove past it and there was a man standing over the carcass on the side of the road. The deer was a mess. The guy was just standing there, practically right on top of the thing, looking down at it as if trying to determine if it was still good to eat, or checking out the gore, or reading his future in the entrails...something. (I suppose it's important to mention here that this occurred a stone's throw from a rather large, rather scary mental hospital from which patients routinely escape.)

I watched him as I drove past, then kept an eye on him for as long as I could in my rear-view mirror. The man did not move a muscle, just stood there contemplating the rotting deer carcass.
