Tough crowd

So we've got this big fish tank in our basement. It's freshwater, and it used to have a nice variety of neighborly fish swimming around in there. Everyone got along. Everyone minded their own business. Until one day my husband came home with two new fish and everything went straight to Hell.

The new kids on the block are called Oscars. I assume this is because they're kinda grouchy. They're black and orange, and roughly the size of a kaiser roll. They're big. They're slow. They're messy. I hated them at first sight. They make my skin crawl.

Soon after the Oscars -- I call them Qusay and Ouday -- moved in, we noticed that the tank was getting emptier and emptier. First the small fish disappeared. Then, the larger ones started going MIA. We checked the floor outside the tank, thinking they maybe jumped out somehow, but there were no little dried out fish corpses anywhere. We didn't want to suspect Qusay and Ouday but they WERE getting awfully big, awfully fast. Then one day my husband forgot to feed them and a rather large fish disappeared, which really got our attention. Turns out that those two monsters were, indeed, eating their tankmates. Cannibals!

Now there's only three fish left in the tank besides them: a small shark, a catfish, and some mid-size fish I don't know the name of. We don't think that they're capable of eating the shark or the catfish -- they're just too darn big -- but that other fish is looking really nervous.
