After an effortless and problem-free upgrade to Thunderbird 2.0 this week, I decided to read about the new features in case there was anything I had failed to notice. One thing in particular caught my eye in the "Advanced Folder Views" section.

  • Thunderbird 2 also allows you to maximize your message view pane by opting for a folder drop down menu instead of the traditional sidebar.

Since I am a big fan of maximizing my screen real estate, I immediately opened the Tools | Options... dialog to enable this promising new feature. After carefully reading every option on every tab (multiple times!), I still couldn't find the new setting to "opt for" this new feature. Searching through the Thunderbird documentation and googling around a bit, still nothing obvious jumped out.

After a while, I finally stumbled on how to do it, so I figured I'd pass on the tip in case it might help others out there. Here's the trick:

  1. In the toolbar area at the top of the Thunderbird 2.0 window, select Customize... from the right-mouse context menu
  2. In the Customize Toolbar dialog that appears, drag the "Folder Location" drop down control onto the toolbar.
  3. Click (OK) to dismiss the Customize Toolbar dialog

Now you can drag the vertical splitter bar between the folder view and the message view all the way to the left to hide it. Not as discoverable as it could have been, but once you figure it out it's a nice feature.
