(shannon) New Dream was written and recorded in 1990, and was never released by RCA/BMG due to a changing of the guard at the top level of the company. Scores of acts were dropped from the label within weeks of the new president taking over, and maddeningly, we were one of those who got the axe. With one week to go before the album's release, and mere days away from filming what would have been the video for the single, New Dream, we were, needless to say, stunned. Honestly, it just blew the wind right out of our sails to come to such a sudden halt after two years of writing, recording and preparing to promote the CD. But such are the vicissitudes of the music business, and it happens to someone every day~ although we hadn't imagined it happening to us.

After that we turned to songwriting rather than recording, and as you know only resumed recording as Boy Meets Girl in 2002 with the release of our independent CD The Wonderground. I say all this not to gain sympathy, but simply to tell the history for those of you who did not know it. We are absolutely thrilled to have this website with our CDs available, and are very excited about all future projects!! After all, self expression is the primary force of life in the natural world, and we each are compelled to create using the diverse and endless palate of the universe.

Soooo....If Reel Life was an introspective contemplation on relationship matters, then for the most part the album New Dream was a look at the world outside ourselves. Here are a few musings on particular songs: Bird in Hand was specifically written about the state of our environment, which was at the forefront of national concerns in the early nineties; and even though eco-awareness has slipped to the back pages it is still a vital concern to us world citizens. It's an issue which continues to be upstaged, yet is at the heart of most of our globe's difficulties. I Love This World is again speaking to a broader overview of human affairs, of understanding and acceptance of our differences. Indigo Drums was written as sort of a dream sequence, or nightmare sequence(!!), of the destruction of our world by human accident or human intent, but certainly is based around the fear of the ignorant and careless misuse of our powers, be they nuclear, chemical or whatever. Mission flipped the issue over, celebrating the beauty of our world and the attendant desire to show it's magnificence to a younger generation in hopes they will appreciate it's splendors with joy. You know how it is when you see a beautiful sight, and if you are by yourself one of your first thoughts is- I can't wait to tell so and so about this, or- I wish you were here. We're all excited and curious about so many things in life; the natural displays of creation that are mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, thunderstorms, as well as the works of humans- our cities, buildings, artworks, music, all these things. And one of our finest impulses is towant to share the experience of it, so that's at the heart of the song Mission. Everybody's Somebody's Baby. Hmmmm. We were living in Venice, California at the time, and every day the newspaper carried accounts of drive-by shootings and the ongoing warfare of local gangs. I felt the city was numb; it was reflected in the LA Times running the stories on 'page 22' rather than the front page, and it occurred to me that every casualty is someone special...everybody really is somebody's baby. I felt the tragedy of it while at the same time not fully understanding it. I have since come to realize more about the disenfranchisement various groups of people feel, and their reactions to being on the outside vary widely. But some are drawn to join violent gangs, destroying themselves and others. This song was imagining being an innocent bystander to a gang shooting gone awry. (On a technical note, I really wish I had sung the vocal softer, quietly, but sometimes you don't know how to sing a new song until you've lived with it for awhile, so this song was recorded in it's infancy and would have benefitted from my being more familiar with it. Hindsight is so useful~hahaha!!!) (geo note: maybe we should sing it again, I'd like to)

These are just a few thoughts, and I'll write more in the next few weeks. Maybe George will tell you about working with Phil Ramone, our producer on half the album. (I will!) But I'll just say, working with Phil was a hoot, a fly by the seat of your pants experience, and we were frequently reduced to side splitting laughter as we sat in the studio with him.

Thanks for visiting our site and for being the curious fans that you are!

With love, Shannon
