about trance
So I've been away for 2 weeks because I tried to install Fedora Core 2 and wiped out my master boot record. Which meant that there was no booting into anything anymore. I was lucky to recover all my data, but my installation (both Windows and Linux) was gone.
Now I'm not the ranting type (really?) but seriously this is what gives Linux a bad name. Apparently it's a bug somewhere between old (old is a pretty relative thing in computer terms) bios's, recent versions of Windows, the new Linux 2.6 kernel and possibly the most recent version of parted (a Linux partitioning tool). I'm not claiming this is an easy bug to solve but it has been known for over half a year, starting with Fedora Core test 1 (there were 3 test versions) or even earlier.
Now I don't know about you, but I think that a bug that wipes out hard drives should be taken a little more serious. It's probably going to be a long time before I try to install Linux on my main machine. I should mention Knoppix though, which has proven to be very reliable distribution and an invaluable tool to fix (some of) my problems.
Oh well, next post will be back on topic about number 5 in the greatest Belgian trance compilations ever: Extreme. Which also happened to be the greatest trance club at one time, sadly times and people change and it is no more. Warning: that site is slow, but pretty much the only reference left I could find. Has it been that long? :-S
