about trance

woensdag 16 juni 2004

I guess it's about time for my Saturday night review. Since my successful Linux install (finally) I only boot up Windows to play games, sadly this blogging software doesn't "do" Linux so that partially explains my lack of posts. The other part is the fact that I'm leaving for a Las Vegas conference call next Sunday, so expect more silence the next 2 weeks.

Anyway, back to the review. In order to support a friends "fishing trip" we started the night in The Temple. The place formerly known as The Megatemple and before that as a little place called Boccaccio. If you think back this far, you probably shouldn't go there anymore. It has become a faceless, uninspired, soulless club, a travesty compared to the one-of-a-kind madness and lunacy that used to took place there over a decade ago when newbeat was fresh and rave still had to happen. I just missed the window to visit Boccaccio so I've never been there and can happily ignore it's heritage but if you're older you might think differently.

So back to today (well, last Saturday actually). Upon entering we were pleasantly surprised by the music. It was sort of a classics 1997-2002 compilation playing. Mostly a trance thing. So you might expect I was happy, and I was. At least for an hour, after that one starts to realize that time moves on and nothing stays fresh, even the best tracks. After 2 hours I think I had heard about 2 tracks that have been released after 2002 and all the other I had danced to for numerous times. After 3 hours I got a little bored and then the dj played Beautiful Things but totally screwed it up by mixing some annoying "retro classic" in the break (I think it was Capricorn's 20Hz). So I got pretty pissed a the dj. I would suggest him to try and stray away from the path a little and try out some lesser known classics.

Apart from that, the club has undergone some minor (but carefully architected and highly effective) changes and the light system has been updated. Nothing compared to Kokorico, but then again, I doubt there are many clubs worldwide that can compare. It's not about the lights anyway. I got the impression the crowd was a little sleepy, but it might have been my state of mind.

Disclaimer: This is only from one visit in the last year, so take it with a grain of salt.

Now annoying my downstairs neighbors with the basses from Eatstatic's Interceptor. Now there's something we don't hear anymore.
