News Aggregators

If you want to get a news aggregator and get headlines from this blog, other blogs and hundreds of news outlets on your desktop check out this article: http://www.ojr.org/ojr/lasica/1043362624.php

It is a good starting point for explaining the usefulness of having one. And for sending out info in RSS format.

Or you can find more free aggregator software, magazine reviews etc. here.

Search Engine/Portal/Directory News Needed

I need your help. I cannot gather the information about all the smaller search engines and directories on my own. Heck I might not even know they exist. So I need you to tell me about them.

If you run a small search engine or directory let me know about it and keep me up to date on any news you might have about it. I will pass it on.

It does not have to be a formal press release. Just tell me interesting things about it, what you want to accomplish and include the URL. Helping others learn about alternative search locations, and why they should use them, is one of my most important tasks. Just click on the envelope icon on the left border and go! Or write me at altsearch_NO_SPAM@operamail.com Thanks.

This Kid Gets It

Teen's Web Browser Wows Top Geeks. Sixteen-year-old Adnan Osmani seems like a typical teen boy interested in computers. But the ultrafast Web browser he created has some MIT and Intel tech researchers drooling. Others are more than a bit skeptical. Karlin Lillington reports from Ireland. [Wired News]

What caught my eye on this story about the browser this young man developed is "including 120 search engines". What is it with these browser companies, they only include one or two search engines?

How about letting the customer decide? How about giving me a big list and letting me choose my default? Or, how about providing an easy way for me to add any search engine I choose? Why is this concept so hard for browser developers to understand? Is there some contractual conflict? Why is the concept of letting the customer pick and choose so tough to understand?

SearchKing v. Google

SearchKing update: preliminary injunction denied [LawMeme: Legal Bricolage for a Technological Age]

Interesting coverage by LawMeme. I agree, that the denial of the prliminary injunction cannot be viewed as a SearchKing victory.

However, it is not over.

If Google's PageRank is an opinion, thus having 1st Amendment protection, can it also be patentable? This is the counterpoint that has been raised by SK in response.

Search Engine Optimization Support Forums http://www.supportforums.org/ made an interesting point:

Here is my take on it. The battle is not in the courtroom. The battle is in the court of public opinion.
