Reading this from Dave Winer about his bet with Martin Nisenholtz, introduced me to Long Bets. It's a great idea: publicly staking a claim to a position on how the future's going to turn out.
We need more antidotes to short-term thinking - to worrying about next quarter's results and next week's celebrity. It's easy to throw out predictions about what's coming. It's harder to pick out those which might come true. But it's really hard to understand what they mean for us, how they might change the way we think and live. And if we don't know what they mean in the long-term, we have no guide to our actions in the short-term - stuff will just happen to us as we get caught in the riptide.
