Aung San Suu Kyi in Good Health, Safe, says Burmese Gov't VOA News

Burma's military government says opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is safe and in good health, days after she was detained.

Burma's deputy foreign minister, Khin Maung Win, told diplomats Tuesday that Aung San Suu Kyi had been taken to a secure place, but refused to elaborate.

The Nobel laureate and other opposition leaders were taken into custody Friday after four people died in clashes between pro-democracy and pro-government protesters. The military government said it detained the opposition leaders in order to protect them. There had been reports in Burmese opposition media that Aung San Suu Kyi was injured before she was taken into custody.

Burmese officials say the detentions are temporary in nature, but refuse to elaborate.

Monday, President Bush called on the military government to release Aung San Suu Kyi, adding he is deeply concerned that Burmese opposition leaders have been arrested.

Earlier Monday, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan called for release of the detainees. The European Union, Britain, Australia, Canada and others have called for the Nobel laureate's release.

Human rights group Amnesty International called last Friday's crackdown unwarranted and harsh.

U.N. special envoy to Burma Razali Ismail says he still hopes to travel to Burma Friday for talks on resuming the reconciliation process there. He declined to elaborate further.

Also Monday, Burma closed its universities, which are traditionally breeding grounds for political unrest.

Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest last year after 19 months of captivity. She was also detained by the government for six years ending in 1995.
